What is the Rosary

The Rosary, a cherished prayer, evolved gradually over time. Its roots can be traced back to the religious orders of friars, who would recite the 150 Psalms as part of their devotions.

As time went on, a tradition emerged where Paternosters (Our Fathers) were prayed for those unable to read the Psalms due to illiteracy. Later, this practice evolved further to include the recitation of either 50 or 150 Aves (the initial portion of what is now known as the Hail Mary).

This rich history formed the foundation of the Rosary prayer we pray today.

How to Pray the Holy Rosary

Never prayed the Rosary before? No problem! Below in this post I have a simple step-by-step guide to praying the rosary. I’ve also included a simple guide in the digital download.

The Rosary is a unique blend of both prayer and meditation, comprising a series of prayers and Mysteries to reflect upon. Each decade of the Rosary offers an opportunity to meditate on a different set of Mysteries, deepening your prayer life.

Below, you’ll find a list of the prayers included in the Rosary, along with the various Mysteries to contemplate as you progress through each decade.

The Mysteries of the Rosary

There are four sets of mysteries to meditate on when you pray the Rosary. Each set contains 5 mysteries, one per decade of the Rosary. They are as follows:

  • Joyful Mysteries
  • Sorrowful Mysteries
  • Glorious Mysteries
  • Luminous Mysteries

The recommended mysteries to pray each day of the week are as follows:

  • Sunday – Glorious Mysteries of the Rosary
  • Monday – Joyful Mysteries of the Rosary
  • Tuesday – Sorrowful Mysteries of the Rosary
  • Wednesday – Glorious Mysteries of the Rosary
  • Thursday – Luminous Mysteries of the Rosary
  • Friday – Sorrowful Mysteries of the Rosary
  • Saturday – Joyful Mysteries of the Rosary
  • During Lent, you can pray the Sorrowful Mysteries on Sundays to prepare for the Passion
  • During Advent, you can pray the Joyful Mysteries on Sundays to prepare for Christmas

The Joyful Mysteries

  • The Annunciation of the Angel Gabriel to Mary
  • The Visitation of Mary to Elizabeth
  • The Birth of Jesus in Bethlehem of Judea
  • The Presentation of Jesus in the Temple
  • The Finding of Jesus in the Temple

The Sorrowful Mysteries

  • The Agony of Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane
  • The Scourging of Jesus at the Pillar
  • The Crowning of Jesus with Thorns
  • The Carrying of the Cross
  • The Crucifixion and Death of Jesus

The Glorious Mysteries

  • The Resurrection of Jesus
  • The Ascension of Jesus into Heaven
  • The Descent of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost
  • The Assumption of Mary into Heaven
  • The Coronation of Our Lady in Heaven

The Luminous Mysteries

  • Jesus’ Baptism in the Jordan
  • The Wedding at Cana
  • The Proclamation of the Kingdom
  • The Transfiguration
  • The Institution of the Eucharist

12 Step Guide to How to Pray the Holy Rosary

Here is how to pray the Rosary. This step-by-step guide is also included on the printable.

1. Begin by making the Sign of the Cross:

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

2. Holding the cross or crucifix, pray the Apostles’ Creed:

I believe in God, the Father almighty creator of heaven and earth and in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell. On the third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of God, the Father almighty; from there he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Holy Catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

3. On the first large bead, pray the Our Father:

Our Father, who art in heaven hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come; thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen.

4. On each of the 3 following beads, pray one Hail Mary for the virtues of faith, hope, and charity:

Hail Mary, full of grace. The Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou amongst women, And blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, Pray for us sinners, Now and at the hour of our death. Amen.

5. On the next bead or the space before the centerpiece, pray a Glory Be:

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit. As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

6. On the centerpiece, announce the first mystery of the rosary and pray one Our Father:

Our Father, who art in heaven hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come; thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen.

7. Continue to meditate on the mystery as you pray 10 Hail Mary’s, one on each of the following 10 beads:

Hail Mary, full of grace. The Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou amongst women, And blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, Pray for us sinners, Now and at the hour of our death. Amen.

8. In the space before the next Our Father bead, pray one Glory be and the Fatima Prayer:

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit. As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

O my Jesus, forgive us of our sins. Save us from the fires of hell. Lead all souls into heaven, especially those in most need of thy mercy. Amen.

9. Repeat steps 6-8 four more times for each decade and mystery.

10. You are now back to the centerpeice. Pray the Hail Holy Queen:

Hail Holy Queen, Mother of Mercy, our Life, our Sweetness, and our hope. To thee we cry, poor banished children of Eve. To thee we send up our sighs, mourning and weeping in this vale of tears. Turn then most gracious advocate, Thine eyes of mercy toward us, and after this, our exile, show unto us, the blessed fruit of thy womb, Jesus. O clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary. Pray for us O Holy Mother of God, That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ. Amen.

11. Optional Closing Prayer:

Let us pray. O God, whose only begotten Son, by His life, death, and resurrection, has purchased for us the rewards of eternal life, grant, we beseech Thee, that meditating upon these mysteries of the Most Holy Rosary of the Blessed Virgin Mary, we may imitate what they contain and obtain what they promise, through the same Christ Our Lord. Amen.

12. End with the Sign of the Cross:

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

I have also included a guide to the Rosary with the 12 steps above and a page with all the Mysteries as well, for reference.
