July: The Month of Devotion to the Precious Blood of Jesus

In this post I will be sharing my printable liturgical living calendar for July, the month of devotion to the Precious Blood.

As a busy family of seven, I find that each month tends to fly by. I don’t want us to miss out on living the liturgical seasons to the fullest, but that needs to be simple and accessible for me in this stage of life. Looking at the calendar each week and each month, I need to be able to see at a glance what is happening. That is why I have created a free printable calendar page for each month of the year with some popular feast days included to celebrate.

For July, this means we are looking at:

  • Growing in our devotion to the Precious Blood (more on that below)
  • Remembering some of our oldest saints like St Thomas, St Anne and St Joachim, St Mary Magdalene, St Mary, Martha and Lazarus
  • Our Lady of Mount Carmel
  • A few more big names like Benedict, Bonaventure, and Ignatius!

Devotion to the Precious Blood

What are some ways we can grow in devotion to the most Precious Blood?

  • attend mass (hehe an easy one!)
  • read about the history of this devotion
  • memorize scripture that talks about this devotion
  • learn the Constant Prayer of St Catherine of Siena to the Precious Blood of Jesus (below)
  • pray the Litany to the Most Precious Blood of Jesus
  • Learn about St Longinus, the soldier who pierced the side of Christ. He declared that Jesus was truly the son of God, because the blood of Christ that spilled on him, healed his eyes.

Holy Scripture References to the Precious Blood

John 1:6-7

If we say that we have fellowship with him while we are walking in darkness, we lie and do not do what is true; but if we walk in the light as he himself is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin.

Hebrews 10: 19-22

Therefore, my friends, since we have confidence to enter the sanctuary by the blood of Jesus, by the new and living way that he opened for us through the curtain (that is, through his flesh), and since we have a great priest over the house of God, let us approach with a true heart in full assurance of faith, with our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water.

Revelation 1:4-6

John, to the seven churches in the province of Asia: Grace and peace to you from him who is, and who was, and who is to come, and from the seven spirits before his throne, and from Jesus Christ, who is the faithful witness, the firstborn from the dead, and the ruler of the kings of the earth. To him who loves us and has freed us from our sins by his blood, and has made us to be a kingdom and priests to serve his God and Father—to him be glory and power for ever and ever! Amen.

The Constant Prayer of St Catherine of Siena to the Precious Blood of Jesus

Precious Blood, ocean of divine mercy: flow upon us!
Precious Blood, most pure offering: procure us every grace!
Precious Blood, hope and refuge of sinners: atone for us!
Precious Blood, delight of holy souls: draw us! Amen.
– St. Catherine of Siena

Our Lady of Mount Carmel

Our Lady of Mount Carmel refers to a popular Marian apparition. Our Lady appeared to St Simon Stock on July 16, 1251 and gave him the Brown Scapular.

  • Here’s what our beloved John Paul II had to say to the Carmelites (and he wore a Brown Scapular!)
  • Here is all the info you need if you want to start wearing the Brown Scapular straight from the Carmelites
