In this post I will be sharing my new free printable solar system educational colouring pages for kids, perfect for your space unit study, for fun or in the classroom!
Studying the Solar System
Studying the Solar System with kids is so much fun. Children have a natural awe of nature, and learning about the night sky and space are interesting to all ages! Since we have been having so much fun with our Solar System poster, I made some colouring pages of the celestial bodies in the solar system.
Why colouring pages are beneficial to children
1. Colouring is great for tactile learners
A lot of the time, kids learn by doing hands-on activities. The simple act of colouring in a picture can help them learn so much!
2. Colouring Helps with Attentiveness
If your kids are too busy to focus on listening to a read aloud, try allowing them to colour while they listen. This can help their brains be able to slow down and focus. They may actually listen better!
3. Increase print awareness
Print awareness is one of the essential pre-reading skills. We need young children to understand that print represents words and communication. In order to facilitate this, we must increase the amount of print they see and the value they associate with it. On these colouring pages, there are titles and facts on each page to help increase print awareness.
4. Colouring Pages increase visual literacy
The ability to extract information from images, called visual literacy, is an essential skill for all ages. Because visual information is transferred faster than print, and is retained better, creating coloured pictures of their topic of study can be very helpful for children’s learning.

This free printable solar system colouring page booklet is a downloadable PDF in an 8.5 x 11″ size format.
Bold lines and white background
I wanted this printable to be printer-friendly for users. Each colouring page has a white background with a border so kids can colour in a dark night sky if they so choose.
Solar System Labels for literacy
All the planets and major celestial bodies are clearly labelled for increased print awareness for young children. Young children are exposed to fewer capital letters so I made the design choice to use block capitals on this poster for added “big letter” practice.
Fun Facts about the Solar System
My kids love facts! I decided to add solar system facts to each page to increase interest and maybe inspire the kids to dive deeper into topics.
