What is Holy Week?

The week leading up to Easter, known as Holy Week, holds profound significance for Christians worldwide, as it commemorates the pivotal events of Jesus’ final days on earth and his ultimate act of love through self-sacrifice for the redemption of humankind.

What are the Days of Holy Week?

Here’s a list of the days of Holy Week and their significance:

1) Palm Sunday: Holy week begins with Palm Sunday. Palm Sunday commemorates Jesus’ triumphant entry into Jerusalem, where people welcomed him by waving palm branches.

2) Holy Monday: The next day of Holy Week is called Holy Monday. In the Gospel Jesus visits the home of Lazarus in Bethany and is annointed.

3) Holy Tuesday: On this day, we recall the lesson of the fig tree, the questioning of Jesus’ authority in the Temple and parables on the Mount of Olives. Jesus announces Judas’ betrayal and Peter’s denial.

4) Holy Wednesday (Spy Wednesday): Holy Wednesday, also known as Spy Wednesday, marks the day when Judas Iscariot conspired with the Sanhedrin to betray Jesus. They paid him 30 pieces of silver. Spy Wednesday is also called Silent Wednesday. We do not know any events in the life of Jesus on this day.

“Then one of the twelve, who was called Judas Iscariot, went to the chief priests and said, “What will you give me if I deliver him to you?” And they paid him thirty pieces of silver. And from that moment he sought an opportunity to betray him.” – Matthew 26:14-16

5) Holy Thursday: Holy Thursday celebrates the Last Supper, where Jesus shared a meal with his disciples and instituted the Eucharist. On this day we also remember the washing of the feet of the disciples and the agony in the garden of Gethsemene.

6) Good Friday: Good Friday is one of the most sacred days to Christians. It commemorates the suffering, crucifixion of Jesus and his death on the cross, the ultimate sacrifice for humanity’s sins.

7) Holy Saturday: Holy Saturday marks the day Jesus’ body lay in the tomb, and we mourn his death.

8) Easter Sunday: Easter Sunday is the day of victory! This day celebrates the resurrection of Jesus Christ. The resurrection of Jesus is the foundation of the Christian faith and the promise of eternal life for his followers.

These colouring pages for each day of Holy Week offers an opportunity for kids to reflect on the events leading up to Jesus’ crucifixion and resurrection. These colouring pages may help them deepen their understanding of his sacrifice and the significance of their faith.
