In this post I will be sharing free printable colouring pages for the Solemnity of Christ the King.

Happy end of the liturgical year!

I thought we could celebrate with a free printable colouring page set for the Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe.

I have included a Latin version of the printable as well.

What is the Feast of Christ the King

The Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ King of the Universe is a relatively new feast in the Catholic Church. It was instituted by Pope Pius XI in 1925.

The vestments for the day are white. In the Catholic Church, white vestments symbolize rejoicing and purity.

According to the White vestments are used during:

  • Christmas
  • Easter
  • Feast of Our Lord, except those pertaining to the Passion
  • Feasts of Our Lady
  • Feasts of Angels
  • Feasts of Saints who were not martyrs
  • Solemnity of St. Joseph
  • St John the Baptist
  • St John the Evangelist
  • Chair of St Peter
  • Conversion of St Paul
  • May also be used for Masses of Christian Burial and Masses for the Dead (to symbolize the Resurrection)

Biblical Quotations About the Kingship of Christ

This feast day is deeply rooted in both scripture and tradition. Here are some biblical quotations about the kingship of Christ.

For [Christ] must reign until he has put all his enemies under his feet. The last enemy to be destroyed is death. For God has put all things in subjection under his feet. . . . When all things are subjected to him, then the Son himself will also be subjected to Him who put all things under him, that God may be all in all.

1 Corinthians 15:25-28

‘Are you the king of the Jews?’ Pilate asked. Jesus replied, ‘Do you ask this of your own accord, or have others spoken to you about me?’ Pilate answered, ‘Am I a Jew? It is your own people and the chief priests who have handed you over to me: what have you done?’ Jesus replied, ‘Mine is not a kingdom of this world; if my kingdom were of this world, my men would have fought to prevent my being surrendered to the Jews. But my kingdom is not of this kind.’ ‘So you are a king then?’ said Pilate. ‘It is you who say it’ answered Jesus. ‘Yes, I am a king. I was born for this, I came into the world for this: to bear witness to the truth; and all who are on the side of truth listen to my voice.’

John 18:33–37

For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Of the increase of his government and of peace there will be no end, on the throne of David and over his kingdom, to establish it and to uphold it with justice and with righteousness from this time forth and forevermore. The zeal of the Lord of hosts will do this.

Isaiah 9:6-7

Ideas to Celebrate the Feast of Christ the King

Here are some ideas for how to celebrate this important Solemnity with your family.

  1. Dress up as kings! We have some simple hand-sewn felt king crowns that we use for this feast as well as for Epiphany. If you aren’t crafty, you could cut them out of paper or buy festive crackers with crowns inside and eat supper like a king! These ones are gold and not too Christmassy.
  2. Make a King Cake: This ideas can also be reused at Epiphany and Mardi Gras as well! You can totally make any cake or muffin recipe in a nice bundt pan (we use this one) as well for the cheater version.
  3. Make a pineapple upside down cake: This was a favourite of mine growing up, and I think the rings of pineapple are just like crowns! Here’s a recipe.
  4. Sing kingly hymns like:
    • Come Thou Almighty King
    • Crown Him With Many Crowns
    • Lord Enthroned in Heavenly Splendour
    • All Glory, Laud, and Honour
