The Story of Saint Valentine, Catholic Saint and Martyr

In the annals of history, one name stands out as a beacon of love, sacrifice, and devotion — Saint Valentine, Martyr. Celebrated each year on February 14th, Valentine’s Day has transcended centuries, evolving into a global celebration of affection and romantic gestures. Yet, behind the roses and sweet nothings lies a tale of a man who, in the face of adversity, remained steadfast in his commitment to serving God and the Church.

Legend has it that Valentine, a Christian priest in the Roman Empire during the third century, defied the decree of Emperor Claudius II.

Not only was Christianity illegal, but the ruler had also banned marriages for young men. Claudius’s aim was to recruit for his military, and he believed that single men made better soldiers.

Recognizing the injustice of this decree, Valentine continued to perform the Sacrament of Marriage for young couples — in secret. His actions were not only an act of rebellion against unjust laws but also a testament to the strength of his faith.

Valentine’s clandestine sacraments were eventually discovered, leading to his arrest and imprisonment. Despite facing persecution, he never wavered in his dedication to God and the Church. While incarcerated, Valentine is said to have tutored the jailer’s blind daughter, Julia.

On February 14th, the day associated with his eventual martyrdom, he faced execution for his defiance of the emperor’s orders.

The details of the execution vary in different accounts, with some suggesting that he was beaten and stoned before being beheaded.

In the face of imminent death, it is said that Valentine offered words of comfort to those around him. His first miracle is said to have been the healing Julia’s blindness.

  2. These are wonderful!! Just wondering if some of the letters were supposed to be missing when I printed them? There’s a “_” in the place of some of the letters “L” and “J”. Almost like fill in the blanks.
