Fall Nature Hunt for Kids
Fall is such a wonderful time for getting outdoors with kids before the cold weather hits in earnest. This fall nature hunt for kids is a great way to do that!
Some of the most interesting nature things occur in autumn time. From moss, lichen, and fungi to the animals preparing for winter, there are many things to observe in the great outdoors at this time of year.
One of the tips and tricks I use to get my kids outside more often and for longer, is to have a plan or a mission in mind as we go. For example, we like to go out seasonally to harvest local fruits.
In autumn time near us, you can harvest cranberries from the bog. That is a very engaging activity. You have to be fully prepared with waterproof gear and boots. You need a bucket for your berries. You can also spot many things on the bog.
Not everyone has a cranberry bog nearby their house, so I thought I would make some fall printables for families to bring with them on their nature time.
A Charlotte Mason Homeschool Nature Walk
One of the ways Charlotte Mason encourages educators to cultivate an appreciation for nature in children is to revisit a nearby nature spot regularly and observe that same spot in different times of year. Perhaps you might want to take this Fall Nature Hunt worksheet to your regular nature spot to see what you can find there in autumn.

We all look these things up all the time. I love learning through books with my children, but in a pinch I’ll use google or Youtube of course! - Why are the trees changing?
- Why do the leaves change colour?
- What are pinecones?
- Are acorns edible?
- Are mushrooms edible?
- What do the chipmunks do in autumn?
- What is lichen?
- How many sticks can I find?
- What are the bees doing?
Some of our favourite Nature Books for Kids in Fall
You know me, my former library lady habits die hard. Of course I need to include some of my favourite fall nature books for kids. Sometimes some hot apple cider in a thermos and a wool blanket and a picture book in the park make the perfect excuse for an outdoor time on a crisp autumn day.
These books are so cute and will really inspire you.
- When Fall Comes: Connecting with Nature as the Days Grow Shorter (poetic)
- Little Homesteader: A Fall Treasury of Recipes, Crafts, and Wisdom (practical. Also this series is adorable!)
- Goodbye Summer, Hello Autumn (A simple but classic changing seasons book)
- The Leaf Thief (this is really cute and funny)
- Leaf Man (a must read)
- A Picture Guide to Fall Leaves of North America (new!)
