Guardian Angels and Our Path to Sanctity
Teaching our kids about their guardian angel will help them grow in holiness! Share these stories of the saints we know and love with their kids to help inspire relationship:
St Padre Pio
Saint Padre Pio was so familiar with his guardian angel that he talked with him like a close friend. He once said that the guardian angels of his spiritual children would bring him messages. Once, when Padre Pio was experiencing demonic attacks, he even scolded his guardian angel for not helping him sooner! Here are lots of examples of this saints angelic interactions.
St Thérèse of Lisieux
Saint Thérèse of Lisieux had a deep childlike trust in her guardian angel. When she was little and afraid of the dark, she would ask her angel to walk ahead of her. She once said she imagined him clearing the way, like a big brother making sure nothing would frighten her. Even as she grew older, she kept that same sweet confidence, trusting her angel to guide her tiny “little way” to Heaven.
In 1897, St Thérèse penned a beautiful poem to her angel.
To My Guardian Angel
1. Glorious Guardian of my soul,
You who shine in God’s beautiful Heaven
As a sweet and pure flame
Near the Eternal’s throne,
You come down to earth for me,
And enlightening me with your splendor,
Fair Angel, you become my Brother,
My Friend, my Consoler! …
2. Knowing my great weakness,
You lead me by the hand,
And I see you tenderly
Remove the stone from my path.
Your sweet voice is always inviting me
To look only at Heaven.
The more you see me humble and little,
The more your face is radiant.
3. O you! who travel through space
More swiftly than lightning,
I beg you, fly in my place.
Close to those who are dear to me.
With your wing dry their tears.
Sing how good Jesus is.
Sing that suffering has its charms,
And softly, whisper my name. …
4. During my short life I want
To save my fellow sinners.
O Fair Angel of the Homeland,
Give me holy fervor.
I have nothing but my sacrifices
And my austere poverty.
With your celestial delights,
Offer them to the Trinity.
5. For you the Kingdom and the Glory,
The Riches of the King of kings.
For me the ciborium’s humble Host.
For me the Cross’s treasure.
With the Cross, with the Host,
With your celestial aid,
In peace I await the other life,
The joys that will last forever.
St Gemma Galgani
Saint Gemma Galgani had an especially vivid relationship with her guardian angel. She said he would gently correct her when she slipped into impatience and even reminded her how to behave in church! One story tells of her guardian angel delivering messages between her and her spiritual director when she did not have money for stamps. She described her angel as serious but kind—like a heavenly tutor making sure she stayed on track. Read more about St. Gemma and her angel here.
